Travel Advisory: Flood Disrupts Nepal-China Border Route Ahead of Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

If you’re planning the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via Nepal in the coming weeks, it’s important to stay updated about recent developments at the Nepal-China border. A flash flood on the Chinese side has severely impacted infrastructure along the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung route, a key gateway for pilgrims heading to Tibet.

Here’s what you need to know:

Flood Washes Away Rasuwagadhi Friendship Bridge

Over the past few days, heavy rains triggered a sudden flood in the Lende river, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi, damaging the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge at Rasuwagadhi. This bridge is a vital link for trade and cross-border movement.

The dry port under construction in Timure has also suffered significant damage, while sections of the main road have been destroyed, halting traffic and stranding cargo vehicles.

What It Means for Pilgrims

For travelers heading towards Tibet for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage, this could mean:
Possible delays in route clearance and border processing.
✅ Limited access through the Kerung (Gyirong) checkpoint, as the bridge and roads are being repaired.
✅ Alternative routes, such as the Tatopani-Zhangmu (Khasa) crossing, are also affected by earlier landslides, with ongoing restoration work.

The local authorities are working to build a temporary Bailey bridge to reconnect the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung trade and travel corridor. However, the timeline for reopening remains uncertain due to unpredictable weather and damaged infrastructure.

Current Situation

  • Cargo stranded: Dozens of trucks carrying goods—including food, clothing, electronics, and electric vehicles—are stuck on both sides of the border.
  • Customs yard flooded: Even the Rasuwa Customs Office yard and nearby EV charging stations have been submerged.
  • Communication down: Networks in the area are disrupted, complicating coordination efforts.

According to local officials, aerial rescue and assessment are difficult at present because of poor visibility and rain.

Should You Postpone Your Yatra?

✔️ If your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is scheduled in the next 2–3 weeks, we strongly recommend checking with your tour operator about possible route changes or delays.
✔️ While the Nepalgunj-Humla-Simikot-Hilsa route remains unaffected, the overland route via Rasuwagadhi-Kerung may take time to reopen.
✔️ Travel agencies are monitoring the situation closely and may adjust itineraries to ensure safe passage.

Nepal-China Crossings at a Glance

Nepal and Tibet (China) are connected by two primary overland crossings:

  1. Rasuwagadhi-Kerung (Gyirong)
    • Distance from Kathmandu: ~190 km
    • Currently damaged due to flood.
  2. Tatopani-Zhangmu (Khasa)
    • Distance from Kathmandu: ~115 km
    • Partially blocked by earlier landslides; repairs underway.

Advice for Travelers

📌 Stay in touch with your tour provider for latest updates on border access.
📌 Consider alternative air routes into Tibet if your pilgrimage dates are close.
📌 Carry extra supplies and prepare for potential delays if traveling overland.

Nepal’s authorities, in cooperation with China, are prioritizing restoration of these routes, but weather conditions and the scale of damage could extend timelines.

For pilgrims eager to begin their spiritual journey to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, flexibility and patience will be key over the next few weeks.
