Upper Mustang 4WD Scorpio Tour-11 Days

Trip Overview

In an age where technology creates immersive digital realities, there remains a distant corner of Earth where time stands still. Welcome to the Upper Mustang Jeep Expedition, a journey into Nepal’s remote frontier—a place untouched by modern distractions and overflowing with raw, historical energy.

This 11-day overland expedition guides you to the arid and mystical highlands of northwestern Nepal—an area sculpted by wind and time, featuring deep canyons, vibrant cliffs, and windswept plains bordered by the colossal Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

This adventure offers not just natural beauty but a chance to witness an ancient lifestyle still thriving. You’ll connect with the remnants of an ancient Himalayan civilization as you explore monasteries, sky caves, and forgotten trails. Once a restricted kingdom, Upper Mustang remained sealed off until the early 1990s. Even today, entry is limited to preserve its spiritual and cultural integrity.

The route starts and ends in Kathmandu, Nepal’s vibrant capital. A robust, air-conditioned 4WD vehicle (Land Cruiser or Mahindra Scorpio) will escort you through the legendary Prithvi Highway to the lakeside sanctuary of Pokhara.

After soaking in Pokhara’s charm, the real overland adventure begins as you traverse through Beni and Kushma, then follow the dramatic Kali Gandaki gorge—flanked by the deepest valley in the world. Passing through scenic villages like Ghasa, Lete, Kalopani, and Marpha, you’ll eventually arrive at the high-altitude desert town of Jomsom, where the warmth of Thakali and Gurung hospitality awaits.

Your journey then ventures deeper into the Trans-Himalayan wilderness, navigating through Kagbeni, Syangboche, and Ghami—each radiating their own distinct charm—until you reach the iconic walled enclave of Lo Manthang.

This ancient citadel is surrounded by massive mud-brick walls and dominated by towering chortens and historic monasteries. Here, you’ll meet the Lhopas, a Tibetan-descended community who have preserved their traditions over centuries.

Spend a full day exploring Lo Manthang’s mystical sites. Discover timeworn Gompas, home to sacred relics and detailed frescoes. Visit the monastic quarters, engage with spiritual leaders, and delve into daily life on the rooftop of the world.

Most notably, you’ll explore the Chhoser Sky Caves—multi-storey, human-made caverns believed to be over 3,000 years old. Their labyrinth of tunnels and chambers tells tales of long-lost rituals and ancient settlers.

From Lo Manthang, your return journey takes you to Muktinath, also called Mukti Kshetra—a sacred site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists, believed to offer liberation and spiritual cleansing.

Finally, descend through Pokhara once again and return to Kathmandu, completing your unforgettable Himalayan quest.

This expedition offers a comfortable yet adventurous experience suitable for anyone with a spirit for exploration, a willingness to adapt, and a desire to immerse in the rare and rugged beauty of Nepal’s hidden kingdom.

Useful Information

Restricted Region Insight

For many years, Mustang remained hidden until Tibetan refugees settled and trade routes were established, drawing official attention. The area opened to trekkers in 1992, and motorized tours followed by 2010.

While there’s no fixed cap on visitors, the mandatory special permit—currently around $500 per person for ten days—effectively limits access. Located near the Tibetan border and steeped in unique natural beauty, the area’s protection is increasingly vital, especially as road projects linked to China’s new Silk Road approach the border.

Climate & Ideal Travel Seasons

Mustang lies in a rain-shadow zone between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, resulting in a dry, high-altitude desert climate—days can reach 30–35 °C, with strong mountain winds.

  • Best times to go:
    • Spring (Mar–May): The stark red cliffs are dotted with fresh green growth.
    • Autumn (Sep–Nov): Clear skies, mild weather, and excellent visibility.
  • Off-season considerations:
    • Summer (Jun–Aug): Heavy monsoon rain in Kathmandu and Pokhara; dust storms here.
    • Winter (Dec–Feb): Cold nights and possible snow make travel uncomfortable.

Tour Difficulty Level

This adventure is moderate in nature—most travel occurs on newly paved sections of the Kali Gandaki route. Short segments, however, use rudimentary dirt tracks, offering a light thrill factor without requiring hiking.

We use robust 4WD SUVs (Land Cruiser or Mahindra Scorpio) to ensure safe, comfortable traversal of loose terrain, stones, and water crossings.

The main challenge stems from high altitude, arid climate, and rustic lodgings, not driving difficulty. Those seeking gentle adventure and cultural immersion will find this trip both accessible and rewarding.

Safety & Support

Your journey is supported every step of the way:

  • Spacious, sturdy 4WD jeeps built for rugged roads.
  • Local guide + licensed driver-mechanic, both well-versed in Mustang terrain.
  • Each vehicle carries fuel, spare parts, and tools to handle roadside repairs.
  • We provide emergency evacuation plans, basic medical kits, and all lodging and meals arranged.

This ensures no one goes hungry, cold, or lonely—even in remote areas.

Who Should Join

Mustang’s jeep route is ideal for travelers of all ages, including families, retirees, and multi-generational groups—provided participants are healthy and adaptable.

Light trail walks supplement the journey. Guests with respiratory or heart conditions, or pregnant travelers, should check with their doctor before booking.

Why Choose This Jeep Adventure

  • Comfortable yet adventurous off-road thrills—no hiking required.
  • Access to rare, secluded landscapes and historic Lo-Manthang.
  • Perfect for families and non-walkers seeking Himalayan authenticity.
  • Immerse yourself in a fading Tibetan-derived culture.
  • All logistics handled—just sit back and absorb.

Transportation & Vehicles

Travel in 6- or 7-seater Land Cruisers or Mahindra Scorpios designed for Himalayan terrain. These jeeps:

  • Offer excellent ground clearance and suspension for rough roads.
  • Provide ample space and storage for passengers and gear.
  • Are fuel-efficient and reliable in remote settings.
  • Include airport and intercity transfers in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Altitude Awareness (AMS)

Despite being in a vehicle, altitude sickness can strike due to rapid elevation changes and long daily drives. Our strategy includes:

  • Three acclimatization days – one in Kathmandu, one in Pokhara, and one in Lo-Manthang.
  • Always staying hydrated, getting good sleep, and sipping electrolyte-rich drinks.
  • Monitoring for symptoms—fatigue, headache, appetite loss—and descending if needed.
  • Optional medication like Diamox to assist with altitude adjustment.

Pre-Tour Preparation

Health is crucial—vigorous exercise and basic fitness training (walking, cycling) are excellent preparation. A general wellness check is recommended for those with health concerns.

Mentally, prepare for rustic accommodations, basic communal facilities, and powerful mountain landscapes. Teamwork and a resilient mindset enhance the experience.

Accommodation & Meals

  • Kathmandu & Pokhara: Comfortably stay in 3-star city-center hotels, with possible upgrades.
  • Mountain Lodges: Start with en-suite facilities up to Kagbeni; beyond that, expect shared, rustic bathrooms.
  • Dining: Breakfasts are provided in hotel days; thereafter, meals are self-arranged—we suggest Thakali cuisine for authentic flavor. Expect to spend $25–$35 per day.

Travel Insurance Essentials

  • Required for your Restricted Area Permit (RAP).
  • Covers evacuation assistance, medical or trip cancellations, and baggage issues—no exceptions.
  • We recommend comprehensive policies that include pre-departure coverage and 24/7 support.

Permit Requirements

To explore Upper Mustang, you’ll need:

  1. Restricted Area Permit (RAP):
    • $500 per person for 10 days; $50 for each extra day
    • Requires a minimum group of two travelers and a Nepali guide
  2. Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit: $30 pp
  3. Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Permit: $20 pp

All permits are secured on your behalf as part of the package.
